The establishment of the Trump reelection campaign appears to have cleared away much of the debris from the 2016 campaign, eliminating John Kasich as a “surprise” president-elect, and making Steve Bannon and Kellyanne Conway important elements in the president-elect’s transition team.
This in-house planning is one of the last certain things to be expected from the Trump campaign—most of the practical details are too urgent for the actual Republican officials to deal with—but at the same time, a Trump reelection campaign is not simply going to pour resources into a 10-state battleground it sees as winnable, even if only narrowly. So while there’s still no formal campaign, and indeed no campaign infrastructure, there’s some clear evidence that the Trump people are setting up some basic campaign resources for at least one candidate.
And if they’re not going all-in for Trump, they’re at least doing enough to make sure Trump can defeat a Democratic candidate in a general election.
How do you prove that? By looking at the staff. Trump’s campaign really wants to win, and it really wants to be around in 2020, so a lot of this is logistics: there are very real people at the Trump campaign who can help a candidate around the country, and the campaign is very interested in finding them.
Take, for instance, campaign manager Brad Parscale, who was so well-regarded for his work building the Trump campaign that even Trump said he was his “dream candidate.” Parscale’s career has consisted of internet and web marketing companies (including serving as the COO of Whitehouse.com, which was founded by an advisor to Arnold Schwarzenegger), and the campaign’s official website looks a lot like Parscale’s previous work. There’s also another important Parscale connection: Steve Bannon, Trump’s former White House chief strategist, is also a former executive of Breitbart. Bannon is now a key advisor to the ac619d1d87
